The History of Wayside Church

One writer writes about this church, “As I had begun research on Wayside Advent Christian Church of Charlton, Massachusetts, my thoughts were of dread and drudgery of the task ahead of me but soon an excitement filled me. I couldn't comprehend how a small church with its waves of growth could stand firmly even when membership was at its lowest. I not only hope to accurately present the past, the present and the dreams of the future of Wayside Advent Christian Church but also to instill in the reader the deep love I personally have for this church.”

The history of this church goes as far back as 1866 under a society called the Second Advent Christian Society of Charlton. The early leaders of the church were laymen committed to the Christian faith. Services early on were regularly held and well attended.  Some leaders traveled in a horse and buggy from Worcester, Mass., to preach at this church. A lot of people have been baptized into this small community of believers throughout its years.

In the 1880s, revival meetings were held, and people from all around come to hear evangelists preach with little to no place to stand. The church, from its earliest days to now, is still considered evangelical. The first ordained pastor was a man named Stanly Alton Reinhardt, who, started as laymen and after time was ordained and served as the pastor. Reinhardt is said to of been the first person to call the chapel a church. Reinhardt's wife named it “Wayside Church,” and its name still stands today.

Over the years, additions were added to the building, such as a Sunday School room, a parsonage, the expansion of a sanctuary, and more.

Don’t let the building hang you up, it is the people there who have always had a heart for the Lord. Reaching out to the youth, prayer meetings, and worship stands out in the history of this church.

Join us on any Sunday to worship the Lord with us.
